Service

Paving sheds water as a sheet, and a single round grate catches only a small part of it. A channel drain cut across the low edge catches the whole width and sends it away in pipe.

A channel drain is a long, narrow trough set flush in concrete with a grate across the top. Water that sheets across a driveway, garage apron, patio or pool deck drops into the channel along its whole length and leaves through solid pipe. [Rein Irving Drainage Company](https://reinirvingdrainagecompany.com/) installs channel drains where paving sends water toward a garage, a door or the house, and where a single round inlet would only catch part of it.

## Where a channel drain makes sense

Concrete does not absorb water, so every square foot of paving sends its rain somewhere. Usually that is fine. It becomes a problem when the slope of the paving points at something that should stay dry.

- **A driveway that falls toward the garage.** Water runs down the slab and under the garage door.
- **A garage apron below the street gutter.** In heavy storms, water from the street can run up the approach and onto the drive. Our guide to [street water flooding a driveway](https://reinirvingdrainagecompany.com/guide/street-water-flooding-driveway/) covers what can and cannot be fixed on your side of the curb.
- **A patio poured against the house.** A patio with little or no fall away from the wall holds a film of water at the slab line.
- **A pool deck** where water collects at a low edge or runs into a planting bed beside the foundation.
- **A walk or side yard paved wall to fence** with no soil left to absorb anything.

For a puddle in a lawn, a [catch basin](https://reinirvingdrainagecompany.com/catch-basins/) is usually the better tool. For water that soaks through soil, a [French drain](https://reinirvingdrainagecompany.com/french-drain-installation/) is. The [French drain versus trench drain](https://reinirvingdrainagecompany.com/guide/french-drain-vs-trench-drain/) guide sets the three side by side.

## Why a single grate is not enough on paving

A catch basin collects water that the ground funnels to one point. Paving rarely funnels water that neatly; it sends a sheet across the full width of the slab. A round grate in the middle of a driveway catches the strip of water aimed straight at it and lets the rest run past on either side. A channel set across the low edge catches the whole sheet, which is why it is the standard choice at driveway aprons and patio edges.

## How the work is done

Most of the cost and most of the skill sit in the concrete, not the channel.

- **Sawcut and remove** a strip of the existing slab along the line, or form the channel into a new pour.
- **Set the channel to grade** so its top sits just below the finished concrete and water drops in instead of skipping over.
- **Pour a concrete haunch** around the channel body. The haunch carries the load from tires to the ground; a channel set in sand will rock and crack the edges.
- **Plan the joints.** Concrete moves with temperature and with Irving’s clay. Expansion and control joints are placed so the slab can move without breaking at the channel.
- **Connect the outlet** with a fitting at the end or bottom of the channel, often through a sediment box, into smooth solid pipe.
- **Run the pipe** with steady fall to the outlet, and test with a hose before the job is closed.

## Grates and load ratings

| Location | Typical traffic | What to look for |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Driveway and garage apron | Cars and light trucks | A vehicle-rated grate and channel body, set on a concrete haunch |
| Patio and pool deck | Foot traffic, bare feet | Heel-safe slots, a finish that matches the deck, a lighter rating |
| Walks and side yards | Foot traffic and mowers | A plastic or galvanized grate rated for light loads |
| Commercial drives and docks | Delivery trucks | Heavy-duty ratings; see [commercial drainage](https://reinirvingdrainagecompany.com/commercial-drainage/) |

Grates come in plastic, galvanized steel, cast iron and stainless steel. Plastic is light and cheap but is meant for foot traffic. Steel and iron carry vehicles. Locking grates stay in place when a tire crosses them, which matters at a driveway apron.

## Where the water goes

A channel drain is only as good as its outlet, and it can be the hardest part of a driveway job, because the apron is often the lowest paved point near the street. Typical choices are a curb core through the street curb, the alley line, a swale or a [sump](https://reinirvingdrainagecompany.com/sump-pump-drainage/) where nothing lower exists. University Park requires roof drainage to be piped through the curb or to the alley line, Coppell has issued residential curb cores for yard drains as engineering permits, and Grand Prairie bars concentrating runoff onto a neighboring lot. For Irving addresses we confirm the rule before work starts. See [where drainage water can go](https://reinirvingdrainagecompany.com/guide/where-does-a-french-drain-drain/).

When the driveway itself is lower than the gutter, a channel at the apron may only catch what reaches it. The City of Irving has rebuilt a driveway approach on Rochelle Road specifically to keep stormwater in the right-of-way, which shows how much the approach matters. Changes to an approach are city business, so we start by finding out what is allowed.

## Combining channels with other drainage

Channel drains often share a solid line with [buried downspouts](https://reinirvingdrainagecompany.com/downspout-drainage/) and lawn basins, since all three carry surface water. Where the paving itself slopes the wrong way, replacing or [regrading](https://reinirvingdrainagecompany.com/yard-grading/) the soil around it may be part of the answer. Water at a patio poured against the house is also a [foundation drainage](https://reinirvingdrainagecompany.com/foundation-drainage/) concern on expansive clay, because it keeps one wall wetter than the rest.

## How the work runs

1. **811 locate** before cutting or digging.
2. **Layout** of the channel line, the outlet and the pipe route, with elevations shot to confirm fall.
3. **Sawcut and excavate** the strip and the pipe trench.
4. **Set, haunch and connect** the channel, sediment box and solid pipe.
5. **Water test** before the concrete is finished around the grate.
6. **Restore** the concrete, the lawn along the pipe route and any crossed sprinkler lines.

Rein Irving Drainage Company plans and manages each job; installation is carried out by licensed and insured drainage contractors we work with.

## Cost

As a national budgeting range, a driveway or patio channel drain runs about $700 to $2,500. The spread comes from the length of the channel, the grate material and rating, how much concrete has to be cut and replaced, and how far the pipe has to travel to reach an outlet. A curb core or a long run under a walk adds cost; a channel formed into new concrete costs less than one cut into an old slab. The [channel drain cost guide](https://reinirvingdrainagecompany.com/guide/channel-drain-cost-irving/) explains what moves the number, and the [cost tool](https://reinirvingdrainagecompany.com/tools/drainage-cost-estimator/) gives a quick range.

## Upkeep

Channels collect grit by design. Lift the grates after leaf drop and after spring storms, clear the sediment box, and run a hose into the far end to check flow. A channel that overflows in moderate rain usually has a blocked outlet line, which [drainage repair](https://reinirvingdrainagecompany.com/drainage-repair/) starts by locating.

## What this work looks like

## Questions people ask

### What is the difference between a channel drain and a trench drain?

In residential work the names mean the same thing: a long, narrow channel set flush in paving with a grate on top. Trench drain is more common on commercial jobs, and channel drain on driveways and patios.

### Which grate rating does a driveway need?

A grate that cars cross needs a vehicle rating, and the channel body and the concrete around it have to carry the same load. Patio and pool deck grates only see foot traffic, so a lighter, heel-safe grate is usually the better choice there.

### Can a channel drain stop street water coming up the driveway?

It can catch the water that reaches the apron, as long as the pipe from the channel can carry it to a lower outlet. If the driveway is lower than the street gutter, the real fix may involve the driveway approach itself, which sits in the city's right-of-way.

### Do channel drains crack the concrete around them?

A channel set on a proper concrete haunch, with joints placed so the slab can move, holds up well. Channels pressed into thin sand or set without a joint plan are the ones that crack and rock loose.

### How do you clean a channel drain?

Lift the grate sections, scoop or flush out the grit and leaves, and run a hose into the end to check flow. Many channels have a sediment box at the outlet that collects most of the debris.
