A drain that suits a sandy Southlake slope would be the wrong choice on flat Coppell clay, and a pipe that may end at the fence in one city must reach the curb in another. Sandy loam over clay that perches water and erodes. ## Irving Irving itself splits into two kinds of ground. In Las Colinas and much of north Irving, the USDA soil survey maps Ferris and Heiden clay: about half clay particles, with a high shrink-swell rating, absorbing water extremely slowly. Water there sits on the surface, so [catch basins](https://reinirvingdrainagecompany.com/catch-basins/), [buried downspouts](https://reinirvingdrainagecompany.com/downspout-drainage/) and [grading](https://reinirvingdrainagecompany.com/yard-grading/) do most of the work. In central and west Irving, sandy soil sits over clay: about 15 inches of loamy fine sand near Irving Boulevard, about 8 inches of sandy loam in Plymouth Park. Rain sinks in and perches on the clay, which is where a shallow [French drain](https://reinirvingdrainagecompany.com/french-drain-installation/) along the clay line earns its place. Low ground near the Trinity and the creek bottoms maps as frequently flooded clay, and outlets there can sit higher than the yard. The city is rebuilding the West Irving Creek channel and built a subdrain on Wingren Drive in Las Colinas for groundwater. Our [home page](https://reinirvingdrainagecompany.com/) covers Irving in more depth. ## Farmers Branch, Garland and Addison East and north of Irving, the soil survey maps Houston Black clay at sample points in Farmers Branch, Richardson and Garland: about 55 percent clay, with a shrink-swell rating near the top of the scale. Like Las Colinas, it keeps water on the surface and moves with the seasons, so surface capture and grade come before deep drains. We confirm city requirements per address in each. At soil survey sample points, Hurst maps as sandy loam over sandy clay loam from about 17 inches, Flower Mound as sandy material over 45 percent clay at about 6 inches, and Euless as sandy loam over 42 percent clay below about 27 inches. That is perched-water country: soft ground and seeps on slopes rather than puddles. Its stormwater customer service line is 817-392-6261 for problems with public drainage.
